ELA: Writing Without B.S.

Martin Brandt | SGMH #2501

Students complain often and loudly that they hate writing. But could it be that what they hate is not writing itself, but the odious requirements we teachers attach to it? Perhaps the real problem is not writing, but predetermined essay forms, minimum paper lengths, and strict requirements to maintain formal conventions. These are the practices that lead inevitably to BS—the true agony of writing. What might a writing class look like if we valued thinking and content over form and easily gamed formulas (See: ChatGPT). What if we focused on the students’ powers of perception
and communication? And how might we balance this preference with the practical challenge of teaching writing, without BS? In this workshop, we will consider what BS is, the ways our practices might be leading to it, and some ideas for helping to liberate ourselves from it.

Math: Online Math Tools

Andrew Sindel & Ana Orzonio | SGMH #2405

In this hands-on, interactive session, teachers will explore a variety of online tools to enhance instruction and streamline digital planning. Participants will learn how to use Google Sheets for lesson organization, create a Google Doc as a digital planner, and leverage GeoGebra for interactive math lessons. The session will also cover using Desmos Classroom to engage students, building a simple website, and recording effective teaching videos. Teachers will have the opportunity to experiment with these tools and leave with practical strategies they can implement immediately.

Interdisciplinary (STEM): Universal Design for Learning

Jose Rivas | SGMH #1108

Emphasizing collaboration and personal growth, participants will gain insights into the foundational principles and scientific rationale that underpin UDL’s effectiveness. Through interactive activities, attendees will directly experience UDL principles in action. The session will equip educators with practical UDL strategies that empower immediate implementation in their own classrooms. These strategies encompass designing activities that encourage student autonomy, facilitating inclusive discussions where all voices are heard, and fostering accessibility through student-driven learning objectives.
