ELA: Finding Beauty in Simplicity–A Creative Writing Exercise
Michele Lamons-Raiford | SGMH #1113
Welcome to a creative writing experience where the goal is not to stretch your
imagination to its furthest limits, but to draw closer to what already exists—those quiet,
uncomplicated moments we often overlook. This seminar will focus on discovering the beauty in the ordinary, in the simple, in the everyday.
Math: Building a Thinking Classroom
Andrew Walter | SGMH #1108
Why is math the most hated topic in grades 6-12? What made math fun for us? Are we spending too much time teaching skills we feel kids are missing, rather than engaging them in becoming mathematicians? Through creative questioning, we can find ways for all students to engage in math through inquiry, discover fun in thinking, and create opportunities for authentic discourse and confidence building. We must find a way to engage all students in big-ideas, help them see themselves as mathematical thinkers and then look for the pathway to connect to our content. Math should no longer be about memorizing formulas and algorithms but rather a way to open doors to curiosity, discourse and undoing years of “damage.” Come experience some Building Thinking Classroom activities!
Social Science: A Time Traveler’s Companion: Exploring History
Melissa Berry | SGMH #1109
In this immersive session educators will learn to guide students beyond textbook
learning, empowering them to step into the shoes of historical figures and experience pivotal moments through deeply personal perspectives. We will utilize methods designed to develop historical empathy, gain deeper contextual understanding, all while seamlessly advancing critical thinking skills.
Interdisciplinary: “The Nature Fix”—Outdoor Reflections
Sarah Taylor | SGMH #1112
Step outside and feel the peace and reflectiveness we gain from looking up into the
trees. Learn about Florence Williams’ research in “The Nature Fix” that shows nature can make us happier and healthier. Experience a lesson that you can do with your students outside on your school grounds (or on a field trip). Help them see how much better they feel when they put away their screens, reflect, and look up into the clouds.
