Myrtice Tyler Salmond has taught for nine years, all at Monte Vista High School. She teaches English, Reading, and AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), both mainstream and college-prep courses.
Whether they see her as a mother, a confidant or just “the best teacher I ever had,” students agree that Ms. Salmond goes the extra mile to help her students stay in school, achieve while they are there, and go on to college. She motivates her students to keep doing their work, even in difficult family or personal situations, and propels them forward with her kindness and her personal interest in their lives and well-being. She is known for helping all students, no matter how challenged, achieve their best.
For her AVID classes, one of her requirements is that students apply to at least four colleges and for a minimum of five scholarships. At the school level, Ms. Salmond serves on the Literacy Team, is the Coordinator for the AVID Site Team, and serves on the Coordinated Compliance Review Team. For the District, she participates in teacher recruitment and works for the San Diego County Office of Education as a staff developer, and is very active in the AVID program as a staff developer and trainer.
Ms. Salmond has additionally supported her students’ education by working with others to obtain an AP Challenge Grant and a $60,000 grant for the Grossmont Union High School District for The California Advanced Placement Legislation.
Myrtice Salmond holds a Bachelor of Arts, a Masters of Arts in Education and Education Administration, a Preliminary Administrative Services Credential, CLAD certification, and a Single Subject Teaching Credential from San Diego State University. She also received her Associate in Arts from Trident Technical College in North Charleston, South Carolina. She has participated in in-service education including a Secondary Literacy Summit, AVID Colloquium, AVID Summer Institute, and Vertical Team Training.
